Cascadia Stories – December 2018

Keeley Brooks is a 15-year old sophomore at LBHS who exemplifies a young person who has taken full advantage of musical opportunities available to her, and gives back to her community.  She recently performed as the violin soloist with the Wenatchee Symphony Orchestra! Here’s some highlights of a recent conversation we had with Keeley:

Musical beginnings – At age 5, Keeley asked her parents for a violin, and she received a one-sixteenth sized instrument.  She has played ever since, with her primary teachers being Pam Hunt and Michelle Vaughn. She also attends summer music camps, initially at the Pipestone camp here, then at Icicle, Marrowstone, and others.

On practicing – Despite a busy schedule that includes school, ski and running teams, and family, she almost never misses a day, putting in an hour and a half on scales, technique, and pieces.  Lately, her pieces are mostly concertos – music that she hopes to play throughout her life. Her daily practice time feels so different, insulating her from the rest of her day.

On performing with the Wenatchee Symphony – By winning the Young Artists competition, she was able to perform a Mendelsohn violin concerto with the symphony.  She said she was nervous at first, and excited.

On music and community – Keeley never felt like an oddball playing classical music in the Methow, in part because Cascadia and others created so many opportunities to learn, listen, and perform.  She wants to inspire younger musicians, and one way she is doing it is offering to be a “practice buddy”.
