Welcome to Music Theory with Lynette Westendorf!

 

Music Theory Class consists of short video lessons released each Monday, with a coordinating assignment, and “Office Hours” each Thursday from 11 -12 when Lynette is available to answer any questions about class via zoom.  She has also generously agreed to answer any questions via email:

Lynette suggests that you follow classes in order and complete the accompanying assignments, as practice and mastery of the basic concepts is fundamental to moving forward. You can join class anytime and catch yourself up as videos and assignments will always be available here on our website once they are released.

Music Theory Class One

1) LINES AND SPACES—introduction to music reading from the very beginning, including lines and spaces, staff/staves, G clef, F clef, ledger lines, the musical alphabet and the symmetry of C notes.

2) CAN YOU COUNT TO FOUR?—basic rhythm, with note values, simple time signatures, bar lines, counting vs. thinking about counting, rhythmic stress, duration.

3) PITCH—instrument ranges, simple intervals (half step, whole step), sharps/flats/naturals, melody, harmony, phrasing.

4) INTERVALS—numbered intervals (unison, seconds, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, sevenths, octaves.

7) A CHORD is a group of three or more notes, usually played simultaneously, and almost always defined by its
relationship to a musical key. A TRIAD is a three-note chord. In our system of TERTIAN HARMONY (built
in 3rds)
